Scouts Canada -- Whitby District Newsletter

CONTENTS

PUBLICITY AND INTERNET ACTIVITY

Besides lots of good notices in the newspapers for our district recently, the winter CLOCA newsletter has a nice picture of ADC Dave Archer and former Scouter Marcel Brunelle presenting the plaque at Long Sault Conservation Authority in October. The plaque commemorates Whitby's first tree planting project in 1972 and the 50,000,000th tree planted this year in the ``Scoutrees for Canada'' project.

Our web site was mentioned in the December Leader magazine and it's in the new 1996 Canadian Internet Directory. Scouts Canada now has an official web site at http://www.scouts.ca which will soon have some information. The Guides also have an official site now. The December issue of [Ontario] Provincial Notes also contained a reference to the unofficial Canadian Rover Home Page (very slow link if accessing from the Durham Free-Net) maintained by former Brooklin Rover Dale Wick (it's in the Canadian Internet Directory, too).

Shortly, there should be a form on the Whitby What's New page on the World-Wide Web where you can register to receive e-mail from a robot every time something new is added. Watch for frequent updates (maybe even daily) of the results of the Whitby KubKar races.

A huge Advertising and Promotion (A&P) campaign is planned for Scout-Guide Week next month throughout the Mississauga to Oshawa 401 corridor. Although Whitby is not directly involved in this, we will be affected by it. Advertising in newspapers, radio and in busses will proclaim ``Be a Leader.'' A toll-free phone number is available for volunteers to register their interest. This campaign was done in B.C. last year and was highly effective.

We need help to man a mall display to promote Scouting during Scout-Guide Week. If you can spare an evening, call Neil Wick at 655-4065 or call the voice-mail number at the end of the newsletter.

VERNA SHEPPARD

Those who knew her were saddened to hear of the death of former Cub leader, Verna Sheppard. Verna had more than 55 years of service as an adult leader before retiring from Scouting a few years ago.

She founded the 2nd Brooklin group in 1969, after moving to Brooklin from Highland Creek in Scarborough, where she had been a leader for many years. At the time, there was a two-year waiting list to get into the 1st Brooklin Cubs, which now no longer exists.

Hundreds of boys have benefitted from the guidance of Verna and of Joe, her husband, who started the 2nd Brooklin Scout troop. Joe died about 17 years ago.

Your editor was one of the original group of Cubs who made up the 2nd Brooklin group and when Verna asked me to help as a leader, I was hooked. I said I'd come for a couple of weeks, but I didn't think I could do it. More than 21 years after I first became a Junior Activity Leader, I'm still involved, so I guess I've concluded that I do enjoy it and I can make a contribution. After watching Verna being presented with 40 and 50 year pins, I hardly thought it proper to quit after only 5 or 10 years!

TRAINING NEWS

Numerous new training courses have been scheduled for this year and next. See the events list for a list of newly-announced courses. Talk to Jennifer Ackland (668-7680) if you need more information on any of these courses.

The Group Committee training scheduled for this month was cancelled due to lack of interest and there will be no TD-1 course held this year. A Crew Wood Badge course previously scheduled by Thornhill Summit has also been cancelled.

Many thanks are due to Kevin Tomlinson for the extremely successful Camp Certificate course held in November. This month's Emergency First Aid course was so popular that Jennifer had to start a waiting list.

Late-breaking News:

Approval has just been received for a pack and troop Wood Badge Part II course at Camp Samac. This is sponsored by the Lakeridge Regional Council. Most Part II courses are sponsored by the provincial council. To register call Jennifer Ackland, who's now in charge of training for the regional, as well as our own district.

FIRST AID AND BABYSITTING AT ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

St. John Ambulance Durham Region Branch has just released their training schedule for the first half of 1996. Besides the usual first aid and CPR courses, there are several of special interest to Scouts and Scouters.

Wilderness First Aid

There's a new ``Wilderness First Aid'' course with specialized information for those who spend time in remote areas. Cold exposure, bear attacks, dental emergencies, and mushroom and berry poisoning are some of the topics covered.

This is a 30-hour course ($110) and you must have a current standard or emergency first aid certificate in order to enroll. The course is being given in Oshawa on March 8, 9, 10, 16 and May 3, 4, 5, 11.

Babysitter's Course

the Babysitter's Course, recommended for people 12 years old and up, costs $25 and lasts about 8 hours. In Whitby, a Sunday course will be held Feb. 11, and Saturday courses will be held Mar. 9, Apr. 6, May 11, and June 29.

Emergency First Aid for Youth

The Emergency First Aid for Youth course is also a $25, 8-hour course. It's being presented three times in Whitby in the next six months: Sun., Feb. 18, Sat., Apr. 14, and Sat., June 22. Recommended age is 10 and up.

Further information is available for these St. John Ambulance courses on our Web site, or on all courses from our ADC for Training, Jennifer Ackland. Register by Visa or MasterCard with the St. John Ambulance office at 434-7800 or 1-800-267-1032 or fax to 434-1042.

FUND-RAISING APPROVAL

Groups are reminded that all group and section fund-raising must be approved by the district executive. Executive meetings are held one week before the council meetings. Please fax your fund-raising form to District President Brian Wick at (905)655-5191 or get the form to some member of the district executive before the executive meeting.

THE LEADER MAGAZINE

All leaders registered this year who signed up for subscriptions to The Leader should have received their first issue by now. If you think you should be getting a magazine and you're not, call District Registrar Viola Tebble to check on it. If you've accidentally signed up for two subscriptions, find another leader who can benefit from your extra copy.

BEAVER NEWS

Congratulations to Kathy Knight, Connie Zammit, and Peter Berry for completing their Wood Badge Part II Colony.

Planning is well underway for the White Tail Slap, this year being held at the Brooklin Community Centre on April 13.

The Whitby District Beaver Log Jam will be held on Sat., May 25, in the group camping area at Heber Down Conservation Area.

CUB NEWS

Whitby's annual White Tail Slap is being held again this spring and representatives from each Cub pack are needed to help with the planning. Remember, this event is for the ``white tail'' Beavers who will be your Cubs next year. This is a tool to retain Beavers into the Cub section.

If you didn't send anyone to the Jan. 29 planning meeting from your pack, be sure you choose someone for the nest one.

Kub Kar races started Jan. 29 in the former Shopper's Drug Mart space at the Whitby Mall. We were lucky to get this large space, so come down any day Monday to Thursday and see the Cubs in action!

The Cub service team have noticed from this year's registrations that there are 33 Cub leaders who have not yet taken a Wood Badge Part I course. The next opportunity is Apr. 12 to 14 at Camp Samac (residential). Talk to your service team member or call Scouts Canada at Camp Samac to register. The cost is $60. We'd like to see as many as possible complete their Part I course.

The Whitby District Cuboree will be held May 10 to 12 at Heber Down Conservation Area. We'd like to see every pack participate. This is a great opportunity to get together with the other packs in the district.

SCOUT NEWS

Congratulations to five Scouters who have completed their Wood Badge Part II a few months ago: Stewart Bowman, Tim Leitch, A.J. Welsh, Andre Robichaud, and Jason Liebregts. They've been working on their Part III (practical application phase) and should be getting their Wood Badges soon.

The next district event for Scouts will be Laser Tag to be held Feb. 4 at Laser Quest in Oshawa. About 120 to 130 Scouts are expected to participate. What have you been doing in your troop lately? Write to the newsletter editor and let everyone know.

VENTURER/ROVER NEWS

ADC Dave Archer tells me he has Fort York in Toronto booked in the fall. Some lucky Venturers or Scouts will get to go there. Ask him about it and maybe it will be you.

It's time to start thinking about the Canadian Jamboree, CJ '97, in Thunder Bay. As a Venturer, you have the option to participate as a participant or as staff. The Venturer service staff who attend the last CJ had a great time. Full details and registration forms will be available in March.

1996 GROUP PHOTOGRAPHY

After tremendous success in the 1995 Scouting season, local Scout photographer Andy Hourahine is pleased to offer this exciting service again for 1996. If your section of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, or Rovers missed out last year, you can capture all your members this year. A photographer will be glad to come out to one of your weekly meetings and photograph both your members individually in uniforms and also an entire group.

Photo packages are provided in a gold embossed frame with the Scouting logo. As last year, packages will be discounted for all sections and free packages will be provided for leaders. For further information and to book your group's photos, please contact Andy Hourahine at (416) 551-8681 (toll-free call).

DISTRICT DANCE

The Whitby Gilwellians will once again be holding their dance for Scouters and friends of Scouting. The dance will be held March 16 from 8 pm to 1 am at the Whitby Legion hall, 117 Byron St. S. Tickets are available for $10 per person, including a buffet lunch, and they usually sell out, so get yours soon.

Call John at 668-0193 or ask any Gilwellian. The Gilwellians are the people wearing Wood Badge beads around their necks. Their aims include promoting Wood Badge training among the leaders in the district and sending a delegation of people to the annual ``Gilwell Reunion'' at Blue Springs Scout Reserve near Acton every September.

WINTER NATURE HIKE AT HEBER DOWN

CLOCA is conducting a Winter Nature Hike on Sun., Feb. 4, at 2 pm at Heber Down Conservation Area in north Whitby. CLOCA says: ``Learn how to identify animal tracks and how animals adapt themselves for the long winter. Fun for all! FREE. The hike is medium level in difficulty as it does not follow a walking trail. Meet in the WINTER parking lot.''

The Maple Syrup Demonstration this year will be weekends from March 9 to 24 and daily during the March Break, March 11 to 15. Call the Conservation Authority office one week in advance at 579-0411 if you're planning to bring 20 or more people.
